WHAT EXACTLY IS

SEX THERAPY?

DO I NEED SEX THERAPY?

Sexual problems can be a major source of distress for individuals and couples alike. Even though sexual problems are quite common, people still have a difficult time talking about sex and sometimes just don't know how.  Many people continue to have limited knowledge about sex despite being inundated by sexual messages in our culture.

Most people who seek sex therapy understand basic sexual functioning and intercourse, yet beyond that their understanding is narrow. Many people cannot resolve sexual problems on their own. Problems might be simple, yet they don’t don't know how to talk about sex or have the right information to resolve the issue and end up creating a bigger problem for themselves. Sexuality is complex and often needs the help of a professional.

WHAT IS SEX THERAPY?

Sex therapy is a like most forms of psychotherapy or “talk therapy.” It provides a safe place for people to talk about their sex and relationship problems. A sex therapist does not have sex or sexual contact with their clients.

Sex therapists are licensed social workers, therapists, psychologists, or physicians who have undergone specialized training to become certified in sex therapy. Sex therapists have extensive knowledge about sex and oftentimes work closely with other healthcare providers on helping clients to overcome their sexual problems.

HOW LONG DOES SEX THERAPY TAKE?

Problems can be solved in as little as 1 to 2 sessions and some problems can take years to resolve.  It just depends on the severity and underlying cause of the problem. The good news is therapy usually helps and problems can oftentimes be successfully treated with therapy, education, and improved communication and connection between partners.
